Wood UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Madison, WI, USA Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) is increasingly used to study and diagnose disease in small animals. The performance of these assays relies upon first obtaining quality RNA in sufficient quantities. There are many commercially available kits optimized to extract RNA from human blood and one designed specifically for animal blood. The purpose of this study was to use stored canine blood to assess the performance of these commercially available RNA extraction kits using RNA yield and purity as benchmarks.
