Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition of aging cats, with the predominant pathological diagnosis being tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis. The cytokine TGF-b1 has been widely implicated in the development and progression of renal fibrosis in experimental models of kidney disease, and total TGF-b1 has been demonstrated to be elevated in the urine of cats with CKD. The aims of this study were: firstly, to validate a method for the quantification of active TGF-b1 in feline urine; secondly, to assess the association between urinary active TGF-b1 and (a) the development of azotemic CKD in a cross-sectional study and (b) the deterioration of renal function in a longitudinal study.
