Snippet: In conclusion, in this pilot study of cats with renal azotemia, a correlation existed between BUN and ammonia, but not between ammonia and Cr or B12. Future studies are needed in a larger population of cats to determine the true prevalence, etiology and effect of hyperammonemia on long term prognosis. Document: In conclusion, in this pilot study of cats with renal azotemia, a correlation existed between BUN and ammonia, but not between ammonia and Cr or B12. Future studies are needed in a larger population of cats to determine the true prevalence, etiology and effect of hyperammonemia on long term prognosis. SDMA seems to be strictly eliminated by renal excretion, and its concentration highly correlates with GFR in animals and humans; therefore, this biomarker can be an earlier marker of kidney dysfunction than serum creatinine (sCr).
