An additional chapter of the course covers medical privacy laws of California, which include requirements concerning the handling and use of protected health information and penalties for violations under California state law. Personnel involved in accepting, accessioning, testing, and resulting the patient samples were required to take the class and pass the exit examination before beginning work in the facility. Non-testing staff who will be present in a laboratory in which patient health information exists must also be HIPAA-trained (e.g. equipment technicians).
