The white matter also contained a few microglial nodules and small number of perivascular lymphocytes (not shown). The perivascular and interstitial lymphocytic infiltrate was composed predominantly of CD8 1 T lymphocytes. No viral cytopathic changes were seen. Conventional CSF and brain biopsy studies failed to identify a causative organism ( Table 2) .
