Classical teaching of the cardiac auscultatory exam, and murmurs in particular, centers around the diagnosis of valvular heart disease. Worldwide, valvular heart disease (VHD) is a major cause of mortality and reduced quality of life for tens of millions of patients worldwide [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] . As life expectancies increase, so does the prevalence of VHD in the elderly. Annual VHD fatalities have increased 2.8% each year in the US since 1979 and are projected to double over the next 25 years 5, 9 . Many forms of VHD manifest with a prolonged asymptomatic period, which can be dangerous if not identified. Patients with asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis (AS), a common form of VHD, who do not undergo immediate aortic valve replacement have been shown to have an annual rate of sudden death of 3-13% 10 .
