Eligible participants were inpatients or outpatients aged 3-18 years. CAP patients <3 years of age were excluded to reduce the probability of viral infection, as it is highest in this age group [10] [11] [12] [13] . Patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, or other chronic lung disorders (excluding asthma), or known primary or secondary immunodeficiencies, were excluded. The local ethics committee approved the protocol for this study (number 2016-00148). Written informed consent was obtained from all parents and children ≥14 years of age.
